Frugal and Festive

Ah the holidays. Why is gift shopping such a crucial part to the festivities? Traditionally gift giving was about gratitude. A way to say I see you and I appreciate you. In recent culture the custom has expanded into something much louder. What was once a sacred celebration has been influence by consumerist mania.
I'm not here to evaluate the state of modern commercial holiday consumption. Instead, I do want to take a minute to write a grounded post on the idea of a frugal holiday season. One that is still rich with intention.
I wish we would reframe how we give gifts. Shift our focus back to the act of giving rather than the volume of receiving. And only giving gifts that add true value to those we care about.
One rule I'm trying this year is not purchasing any items smaller than a toaster. I'm sure I will make exceptions but the intention is simple. I want to give gifts that actually add value to our life. Not more things to fill the toy box, junk drawers, or the mid-March donation box.
And no one likes to start January off feeling behind or stuck under a mound of unused gifts. Having a mindful holiday that shows appreciate while still keeping the peace sets us up for a successful transition into the new year.
This season, I encourage you to think of your gifts as symbols of appreciation. A reminder that more stuff doesn't mean more happiness. We usually find happiness in intention and the act of giving.
